Republican vs. Democrat

It’s that time again. Time to watch the candidates go at it. Time for everyone to take sides. Time for those so inclined to declare, “I’m right. You’re wrong.”

When we’re in the heart of an election year, a little pit grows in my stomach. (You can’t see it, though, because it’s crowded out by the Oreos.) I just don’t like the way it all plays out. Never have.

Facebook gives us a new insight into everyone’s political leanings, too. It’s the perfect forum for posting those sweeping “All conservatives are (fill in the blank)” and “All liberals are (fill in the blank).” Time for the arguments to begin.

I can almost hear keyboards across the nation screaming…

“I’M RIGHT!!”

“NO, I’M RIGHT!!”

“NO, I’M RIGHT!!”

And just like Pee Wee, I want to scream, “I KNOW YOU ARE, BUT WHAT AM I??”

Just to alleviate the tension a bit.

It makes me sad. Truly, it does. And do I have a good answer? Nope. I just feel in my heart that we’re missing the point. And what do I think the point is? Love. Acceptance. Peace. Respect. Humanity.

I know, I know. You can argue that without (fill in the blank) provided by the Republicans or without (fill in the blank) provided by the Democrats, we’ll never have (fill in the blank). You’re gearing up to make your case, I know.

And you have the right to make your case. And so does your friend. And your neighbor. And your spouse. It just doesn’t have to be so… ugly.

The only politics I like, really, are the Politics of Dancing. Mostly because the hairdos in the video are so quintessentially 80’s. And because there are roller skates.

And because when the music’s blasting and you’re bustin’ a move on the dance floor, nobody seems very interested in verbal sparring.

Let’s dance, shall we? I think Pee Wee would approve.

  1. I’m with you on this! It gets so ugly and childish. As a grow up I find that I don’t like to even associate myself with a particular political party because they’re all so awful towards each other. Here’s to surviving another election year with grace!

  2. Katrina, I like politics, but I don’t like how people get all heated up about it. It’s like going back to kindergarden…

It’s My Birthday!

I sometimes wish I’d been an adult when my mom was in her 30s and 40s—that I could have been her best friend instead of her daughter. I look at her pictures back then, and I see this gorgeous, sexy, vibrant woman—a part of her I never had the privilege of knowing. She was so many people, and I only knew a fraction of her.

We women deal with the patriarchy and mansplaining and misogyny every single day of our lives. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Some of us deal with it from strangers, some from partners, some from husbands. We’re tired. We don’t want to deal with it any more.
