Okay, friends and loyal blog followers also known as friends, I know I just posted. I know I was just wallowing in self-pity because my agent said “no” yesterday.

I KNOW.

But as this world often does, mine just did a big 180-degree turn.

A few minutes ago, I received word that my essay had been selected as a “2012 Notes and Words” finalist.

This is big for me. BIG.

Michael Chabon, Anne Lamott, Kelly Corrigan, and John Hodgman BIG.

Random House/Ballantine senior editor BIG.

Top literary agent at ICM BIG.

Executive editor of “O Magazine” BIG.

Attending the performance and after-party at the Fox Theatre in Oakland with CAKE as entertainer BIG.

And most importantly, sharing my Gus story BIG.

THAT BIG.

Here’s the thing. The winner will be chosen based on Facebook “likes” and judges’  discretion. So here’s my request.

Please, please, pretty please with sugar and pinot noir and vodka shots on top — go vote for me.

Here’s how:

Go to the Notes and Words essay site via Facebook by clicking this link. THIS ONE RIGHT HERE.

Read my essay titled “Life Lesson”.

Click “like” at the bottom of the screen under the essay. Leave a comment if you’re so inclined.

Click “like” on the Notes and Words site, too, just because they’re awesome.

Then, please share this information with all your friends and family and ask them to do the same. They don’t have to “like” my essay if they really don’t like it. But I’m hoping they will.

And then accept my heartfelt gratitude and my undying devotion to each and every one of you for helping make this dream a reality. And someday, when I can afford to buy you all Thin Mints and a damn good bottle of Cabernet, I will.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

And then thank you again.

XOXO

  3. Hi Katrina-
I just posted a comment on FB under your essay. I wish you very well for this contest. What a beautiful essay and what a teacher Gus has been to your family and to the rest of us about what’s important in our lives. Many wishes to you for the upcoming weeks…

Happy Holidays. (Or Not.)

Society says we should be jolly and happy and thankful and joy-filled during these days. Commercials tell us to feel the magic and the wonder. But we don’t all feel it. Some of us feel hollowed out. Some of us feel lonely. Some of us feel the weight of having a double-digit bank account or mounting credit card bills. Some of us watch cheesy holiday movies and feel that we’re not enough, that we don’t measure up.

Some of those people are me. Some might be you.

Love and Gratitude

When I was younger, I believed a family was easy to define: A mother, a father, the children, a pet or two. I spent most of my life building that kind of family—the kind that had been modeled to me, the kind that I read about in my beloved books.

Poor As a Church Mouse

In this forced season of unemployment (300+ applications and not one interview. Seriously.), I have finally learned to slow down a bit. I spend long days writing my memoir and working on my next book. It is a luxury I’ve never had.
